This is the first time I spent a weekend in Manaus so I had an opportunity to finally see the meeting of the waters up close. The meeting of the waters occurs when the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões meet forming the Amazon river. The two rivers are different densities, temperatures and have different currents so they take 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) to mix.
My trip started at the Tropical Hotel located near Ponta Negra Breach. We headed down river passing under the only bridge over the Rio Negro (or Amazon river for that matter). The bridge was complete in 2011 and was built at the narrowest place on the Rio Negro a 3.6km span (2.2 miles). After the bridge we passed downtown Manaus then on to the meeting of the waters.
After seeing the meeting of the waters we cruised into January lake for lunch, a jungle walk to the Giant Water-Lillies and cruise around the lake and jungle in motorized canoes.
